exiting X windows in Mandrake

Hi! I am using both Redhat 8 and Mandrake 9. In redhat 8, I can easily exit x windows by issuing the command init 3. In Mandrake 9, this won't work. Is there an easy way to do this?

Thanks in advance.

what does wm mean? I am using gnome. When in console, typing logout doesn't work. it says I have to use exit command, which in turn closes the console window. What I want to do is temporarily exit x windows

wm = window manager

when I said logout I meant press logout in the menu

use ctrl_alt_F1 through ctrl_alt_F6

to get out to a terminal and leave X running

to go back use alt_F7 through alt_F12 depending on the display X is running on

0:0 = alt_F7
0:1 = alt_F8

etc...
