i remember someone saying that you could just use the keyboard combination of ctrl-alt-f1 and install it from there. it will basically bring you to the text mode. when you're done with your configurations, you could use the key combo ctrl-alt-f7 to get back to your previous X session. i'm not sure about this though and indeed from my limited experience using the new nvidia universal installer (all bad, btw... still using older versions of nvidia drivers that were in rpm format), the safest way maybe indeed to edit your /etc/inittab and reboot your computer.
