Question exiting x window mode

I'm in the GUI (x window) mode. But I want to exit it so I
can install the nvidia run pkg. I've tried at the terminal
it said I needed to exit the x win mode.
I tried to edit the inittab file using vim and gedit
with no luck(only saw blue lines).
how can I do this?
thanks
Galilee

if you want to edit the inittab file change the init 5 to 3, save it and reboot your linux

i remember someone saying that you could just use the keyboard combination of ctrl-alt-f1 and install it from there. it will basically bring you to the text mode. when you're done with your configurations, you could use the key combo ctrl-alt-f7 to get back to your previous X session. i'm not sure about this though and indeed from my limited experience using the new nvidia universal installer (all bad, btw... still using older versions of nvidia drivers that were in rpm format), the safest way maybe indeed to edit your /etc/inittab and reboot your computer.

don't bother editing the inittab file. Go to a text console with ctrl-alt-F1. Log in, and as root do
init 3
or
telinit 3
this will get you to runlevel 3 (no X).

jusdt pressing ctrl-alt-F1 will not kill X. It will just give you a text console while X keeps on running. You have to explicitly kill X with
init 3
