excel to csv generator

hi,
i want to export my excel data to a csv format so that i may upload it in my actual program.
can anyone help me solve this problem.
simply saving the *.xls file in *.csv format is not working nor is the export option in excel(linux) working.Exporting the .xls file to a .csv file is not generating comma separated values and it is always exporting in pdf format.
can anyone help me.
i am using fedora core 4.
its really urgent
thanks
shweta

menu File > save as
type a name for the file
expand the "file type" setting and choose csv
click OK
On the next dialog choose your encoding, field and text delimiters
