Exceed - remote login to Linux (graphical)

Have installed Exceed on an XP machine and trying to figure out to establish a graphical connection with my Linux (RH90) machine.

I am able to get a terminal connection (text) but have got no clue how to establish the graphical connection.

Could you give me a direction or some help? :study:

Thanks!

been a while since i used exceed but here goes, there should be a configuration program called Xconfig or something like that, you can do everything in there. firstly you need to configure exceed to accept connections from the rh90 machine, then you need to set the protocol to XDMCP - passive, this means the x server just sits there waiting for connections, now ssh to your rh90 machine and do export DISPLAY=host.running.exceed:0 you should now be able to run x-windows applications through the terminal and they should appear in exceed, i suggest you run a window manager first like icewm or wmaker.

sorry if ive missed something there but its been over a year since i used exceed. the help files that come with exceed should help you with the windows side and there is a remote X howto on tldp.org to help you with the linux side.

hope something in there helps

Thanks Kev, same for me. I used it about 10 years ago but the info got lost somewhere :-)

When starting exceed / xstart there is always a command line .. at this moment I use (which will provide a terminal screen on XP)

Application: XTerm
@[XTerm,method=stdappdb
Parameters: -display yourlocalhostname:0 -ls

But there is a command line that will allow you to get a graphical login ... do not know which applic on Linux handles that.

What could I do with the icewm (sorry but I am newbie again)

the graphic login is done with the xdm daemon but i have no idea how to configure it. icewm is a window manager(lets you move windows round the screen, adds titlebars, etc), but if you get xdm working then it will start a window manager for you so you dont need to worry about it.

Guess that somebody here must have got Exceed working in which the Linux login screen pops up on a remote machine?

Anybody?

Exceed looks like it may be a solution to one of my problems too. If you let me know where to find a copy I will join you on the quest to make it work.

On your linux box in the xdm-config file, you have to comment out the line that reads:

DisplayManager.requestPort: 0

Use "!" to comment this line out.

On the PC, I use
Start
Program Files
Hummingbird
Exceed
xconfig - this brings up a program group and I double click communications. From here I select XDMCP-query, then configure. Place the host name of your linux box here and OK your way out. Double click the Exceed icon on your desktop or go through Start - Programs etc.

If you are using GDM like me, just enable XDMCP in the config program, then in Exceed follow jdrebits instructions. I did that only this morning in fact, it works fine.
