Question Esd dies

When I run esd in a terminal window it's fine, until some application (e.g. xmms or rhythmbox) decides it doesn't need it anymore and it stop. I don't think it should do this, and I want to know why it does. Do I need to write a keep alive script round it? Do I need something in init.d? Should I be using arts or jack instead :-D?
