Error with Adept: cannot commit changes-problem with synaptic install

I have a problem with adept, whenever I click on commit changes after choosing to install a package,I get an error message:

"There was an error commiting changes. Possibly there was a problem downloading some packages or the commit would break packages.

I have for this reason tried to install synaptic first from adept, then from terminal giving these commands:

sudo apt-get install synaptic
it doesnt install because I have dependencies problems

dpkg -i namefile.deb
again doesnt install it because of dependencies problems

Do you have any suggestions?

I just need to get synaptic, because adept is giving me too many problems, and I believe that when I get to install synaptic, everything will be much easier!

any help is appreciated
thanks

Well the obvious thing seems to be that your missing dependencies from the repositories that apt-get looks in. If you post what's inside /etc/apt/sources.lst that may be helpful. First thing to look at would be if you have the lines about multiverse and universe not commented out.

Nothing is really jumping out. I kind of suspect there is some issue with being able to identify dependencies. Have you been able to install anything using apt-get?

In case it is an issue with repositories, you can try delete "it" from the website for the first four groups. This will give you essentially the same repositories as me. This will be further away from you so downloads my slow down a tad, but it could tell us if something is wrong with these particular repositories you use.

Got it

Go to Adept menu -> Safe Upgrade. This setting WILL proceed normally. After you apply the changes and the system upgrades you should be ok.
