error installing redhat 7.2
 

Hi,
I am new to Linux and would appreciate it if you could help.
Dell with the following: - 128MB RAM - Intel Pentium III 600MHz processor
- 13GB HD- CD-RW drive
I configured BIOS for CDROM firstboot
I have win 98 on my pc.
I put the redhat 7.2 disk 1 in the CDROM drive and rebooted 3 times.
Get a different error each time.

…

I have no idea what the problem here is? I would try using a later version of RedHat seeing as new drivers etc come with later releases. Did you burn the disks yourself, did they burn OK? There are some options with the versions (8, 9 and Fedora) to do a disk integrity!

Hang in there, once you get the hang of Linux (and it will take some time), you'll never want to boot that Windows partition again :-) (esp 98! squirming!!!)

i´ve had some similar problems installing rh7.2 and above.

tried to install 7.2 on my ancient p133 laptop several times, but starting the xserver was always the end of the road. redhat seems to have problems with the display settings, especially concerning older hardware. the problem here was always that x didn´t want to start; the console worked fine. as i wasn´t patient enough to reconfigure my XF86Config, i tried 8.0 and had the same problem with starting x.

finally, i got x to start once under 7.2 again, and only once. it was so slow that i moved to slackware which did the job much better than redhat--at least on my old pentium.

i don´t know if this is exactly what happened to you, but your #3 boot seems like that. there is no general handling advice as far as i know, but maybe the x thing is a hint.

maybe you should make sure that your win98 has all the necessary drivers it needs to run your system smoothly. if you are using standard graphic drivers for display and for the graphic card, replacing them with the original (and suitable) ones would be my next step--or choosing another distro. *g*

(my earlier rh 6.0 ran fine on my nobo as far as i supplied the win95-partition with all the necessary things including the display and graphic drivers)

i don´t know if this has anything to do with it, but what was annoying to me was the following thing: when i tried to set up redhat 9.0 on my p4 main machine (512ram, 120gig drive), the installing programme _anaconda_ crashed down--four times!

seems like rh and me don´t fit together ...

you´re welcome! but i don´t know if i did you a favor:

as i wrote above, rh 6.0 ran fine with my old notebook when having a win95 stuffed with all drivers in front of it.

BUT: your hardware seems to be much newer than my pentium1, so that you might run into severe hardware compatibility problems!

i have to apologize: my intention was to tell you i had similar problems with 7.2 and above, not to recommend you rh 6.0! i am sorry for that, i didn´t want to cause such a misunderstanding!


when i read your first post again, i asked myself why you want to use rh in such an _old_ version, why don´t you give lets say 8.0 or even better 9.0 a try? your hardware seems to be nearly up to date, and a newer version would support the hardware surely better than 7.2--and lightyears better than version 6.0.

the point with my old nobo was that i had severe disk space problems (1,4gig) combined with even bigger speed problems, so that i couldn´t install newer versions of any desktop. but with that 13gig drive and a p3 you have both space and speed!?
ok, maybe you´ve got to shrink the w98 partition when you need the space for windows.

if there should be compatibility problems any further and if you would like to have a real recommendation from me: SuSE linux has a good compatibility, at least with the newer versions. i have made gooood experiences with it, as it is the only distro i know that supports my main machine´s hardware right now. there´s everything supported from scratch, without self-compiling any kernels, drivers or the like.
for your pc, i would try suse 8.1 or higher.
