Error installing linuxant modem driver
hi,
i want to install the linuxant modem driver, while runnig hsfconfig this is the error message: This package does not contain pre-built modules suitable for your system: Distribution: Mandrake-10.0 Kernel arch: i686-SMP Kernel version: linux-2.6.3-4mdksecure Trying to automatically re-compile the modules.. (this requires a C compiler and proper kernel sources to be installed) Where is the linux source build directory that matches your running kernel? [/lib/modules/2.6.3-4mdksecure/build] /lib/modules/2.6.3-4mdksecure/build WARNING: missing file llib/modules/2.6.3-4mdksecure/build/include/linux/modversions.h The cause of this problem is usually a missing or misconfigured kernel source tree (and sometimes an incorrect directory or symbolic link). First, ensure that the proper kernel source and compiler packages from your distribution vendor and/or the community are installed. The Linux kernel can then be reconfigured by running "make menuconfig" under the kernel source directory (usually /usr/src/linux). Verify that the proper options for your system are selected, and that CONFIG_SMP ("Symmetric multi-processing support" under "Processor type and features") is disabled, as this driver is presently designed to work on single-processor machines. Then compile and install your new kernel (for more information about this procedure, see the README file under the kernel source directory), reboot the system using the new kernel, and re-run "hsfconfig". The kernel source directory is in "/usr/src/linux-2.6.3-4mdk" but really the file "modeversions.h" are missing in the "/linux-2.6.3-4mdk/include /linux/"and the symblic link "build" in /lib/modules/2.6.3-4mdk is is to the correct directory of kernel source. The CONFIG_SMP is set to "NO" plz help me what can i do to solve the problem. |
linux-2.6.3-4mdksecure is what you list as the kernel. is that the source that you have? Or do you have linux-2.6.3-4mdk? They have to match.

hi,
this is the hsfconfig error after removing 2.6.3-4mdksercure: Where is the linux source build directory that matches your running kernel? are you sure they have support for 2.6 kernel. that file u mentioned
build/include/linux/modversions.h I think thats a 2.4 file and not there in 2.6. u might wanna check with linuxant if they support the latest 2.6 kernel. if u bought the driver that is. :-) |
Mandrake 10, smp with linuxant modem
I have a similar problem,
I'm trying to install the linuxant driver: hsfmodem-6.03.00lnxt04061800full.tar.gz, for custom kernels. It starts installing but a the end I get an error saying that the device was not ready. I can get it to work with 2.6 kernel, but I need it with a compilation of kernel 2.6.3-smp. Is there a configuration file or somewhere where I can switch a value, or I just have to wait until Linuxant delivers compatible drivers ? I' working on a: Intel Pentium 4 with Hyper-threading 2.8GH Processor |
hi,
the 'device was busy i think it means the modem is busy with other installed driver so that should be removerd first, for installation of the hsflinmodem driver the kernel source should be in /usr/src. let me konw if the hsfmodem-6.03.00lnxt04061800full.tar.gz is a full 56kbp or just 14kbp? and if you can gave us the url to download it. |

After a succesfull compilation, this is the exact error I get: "ERROR: hsf driver not active"
I have my sources in /usr/src/linux-2.6.3-7mdk The driver, I got it from linuxant http://www.linuxant.com/drivers/hsf/...800full.tar.gz It's only the limited (14kbps) version I think it has to do with the 2.6.3-7mdk-p3-smp-64G kernel I'm running, because I can get it to work with kernel 2.6.3-7mdk, but I want to take advantage of the Hyper-threading feature of my procesor. |

Ok, so I tried to find the sources of the 2.6.3-7mdk-p3-smp-64G kernel, I have them in my /lib/modules/2.6.3-7mdk-p3-smp-64G kernel, its the same as 2.6.3-7mdk
This is what I get: [root@video paul]# hsfconfig Conexant HSF softmodem driver, version 6.03.00lnxt04061800full If you need license keys, assistance or more information, please go to: http://www.linuxant.com/ When reporting a problem for the first time, please send us the file generated by "hsfconfig --dumpdiag". ERROR: hsf driver not active [root@video paul]# Can I set the modem drivers, or what can I do?? |
try
Code:
modprobe <drivername> |
hi,
i think this error means that the modem is not set to it's proper communication port, possibally /dev/modem or whatever the modems commuincaion port is,one can check it from kppp ->Configure ->Modem -> Query Modem.if the response of Query Modem is "Modem is busy " or "Unable to open modem", it means the modem is not confgured to it's proper communiction port, othewise the response is "Modem is Ready" and there is a progress one can see a chart. In the kppp ->Configure ->Device tab we can configure the modem to it's proper port. |
linuxant u suck.
taking money to provide drivers is shity. i read their explanation. but then why does the conexant site has a link to linuxant. and i paid conexant for my modem. what is this world coming to? |
I've already checked with lsmod without any luck, I don't see in the list anything related to the hsf driver.
What else can it be!!?? |
hi,
you didnot write ,is hsfconfig successfurlly installed the driver,if not, then it is not possible to see the driver with lsmod. |
It just doesn't work with kernel 2.6 - smp (It does work without smp) Is there a way to set it for smp?
|
hi,
possibly it don't work with other kernels, the linuxant want to buy the driver for specfic kernels if some one want that. |

If you check on the conexant site, there IS a link to Linuxant, so please don't blame them before checking the Conexant site entirely.
If this will be my machine, I will probably buy the driver. However I read on some other posts that hardware modems only cost $15, so I guess it's not worth it I did installed the free 14.4 driver, and after I 'successfully' connect to the internet, I can't do nothing on the net. No bytes are transmitted what so ever Any suggestions? I haven't heard of a single guy at LinuxQuestion that has a AC 97 Soft-Link Voice Modem working Regards |
Hi,
If you are having trouble navigating an you see the lights of your modem monitor that are not blinking (no bytes transmitted), it could be you network configuration, you should remove any configured gateways on your Ethernet cards, you can test this by stopping the network service: /etc/init.d/network stop and then connect to the Internet with the modem. It should work. If it does, it's because you probably have to change your network configuration. Hope this works ! |
Yes, virtually no data is transmitted at all
That thing you mention about the network is strange, the machine is not even connected to a network of any kind (it's the only computer in the house) I do receive a 'starting ethernet service 0' error when booting up the computer though Why do you think that the ethernet connections have something to do with it?
