Error in kernel upgradation

I have installed redhat 9.0 in my system. For upgrading the kernel version i have downloaded the kernel 2.6.23.12. After completing all process for creating vmlinuz and initrd and changes in grub.conf, i just booted the system. After mounting /proc filesystem message, getting error as
"
segfault at 00000021 eip 00000021 esp bfdbdc68 error 4
printk:3748959 messages suppressed. "
The above was continued..... Linux is installed in SATA drive.

Can anyone tell the stable version?

Redhat 9 is obsolete. Do not expect things to work with it.

The version you were installing is stable... the latest stable version of the kernel is:
2.6.24.2 from http://www.kernel.org/

Best advise: install an up to date OS.

Fedora Core 4 is also obsolete.

fedora 8 is current, fedora 7 is about to become obsolete, fedora 9 is out later this year.
Considering haw much information there is about the latest releases, I wonder how you are making your selections.

If you install fedora 8 you can use yum to update the kernel.

However, it sounds like you forgot the "make modules" or "make modules install" step.
