Error 'format not supported' when trying to burn Audio CD from MP3s

Really need some help here. I've got Suse 10.0 OSS and, realising that out of the box you cannot play MP3s or DVDs, downloaded the right packages (Xine, etc).

So, I am now trying to use K3B to burn some MP3s to CD (rather than take the original CDs into my car and risk scratches etc). My setup for info is:

all Mp3s stored on an External HDD, connected via USB and I have read access only.

When I launch K3B and try to drag and drop MP3 files from this HDD, I get an error

"/<path to file.mp3>" format not supported.

This doesn;t sound like a permissions issue, and I have checked K3B setup and I appear to have all the relevant engines etc. (FLAC, OGG although I know these are codecs to convert files)

I get the same for OGG, WMA formats too.

Anyone know why I cannot burn Audio CDs, is it the same restriction on Suse 10.0 OSS as the issue with not being able to play MP3s (i.e. it;s disabled for 'legal reasons')

Help much appreciated.....

How are you trying to burn the CD? I think that you either need to burn a data CD, if your player can play mp3s or convert the mp3s and burn an audio CD.

Also, run through the mp3 setup. There may be some programs that you need for more functionallity that are missing.

OK, thanks for the help. For clarity, I am using K3B to burn an audio CD (for my in-car CD player) from a library of MP3s, WMAs, OGGs etc. So I want K3b to convert the format to Audio CD format, then physically burn the Audio CD file to disc (I have a DVD/CD RW combi that K3b 'sees' and recognises.

I am using the K3B Gui and following the wizard to create an audio CD, but every time I 'drag and drop' an mp3 into the list of files to be burned , I get the same, 'format not supported' error

I suspect that Suse 10.0 OSS has this functionaility disabled by default, in the same way as AmaroK and Kaffeine had 'queered' verison of the Xine engine so that I couldn't play DVDs or Mp3s 'out of the box'.

I then downloaded a release of Xine and a few other RPMs (Lame, lamemp3libs, dvdcss, xine, etc) and everything plays just dandy.

Will keep googling for more info and post my results back here!

I haven't used a converter in years, probbably around 8 of them.

I have burned straight mp3s to AUDIO CD, which is fully supported by all the cars, stereos, and cd players I have played them in.

I don't know if this is an exclusive ability of Nero, but since there is a Nero Linux, you could use that to make life a lot easier.

Now, as I recall, there is a mad file of some kind use in burning when using most Linux burners, which gave people the ability to burn media properly. You are probably missing this package.

you've triggered my memory, I do remember reading something about having MAD rpms (or somesuch) installed to burn properly.

I'll try it out tonight, it leads me to believe that Suse 10.0 OSS doesn't support CD burns out of the box. a 'format not supported' error in K3b threw me because it made no sense that something as widely used as K3B would not know what .mp3 format was.

$20 for a Nero license! bah!

According to their support department, who may have misunderstood my English in the e-mail, silly Germans... I believe with any Windows version of Nero, even those that come with drives(OEM) you can get a Nero Linux key, for free. I have not yet done so, as I am trying it out, and trying some of the competition, well...open source...hard to call it competition really, anywho...

It does support burning out of the box, but as it does not support MP3 out of the box, it cannot encode or decode it, which means no burning it either as anything but a data file until you update the libraries.

I do have an old OEM version of NERO, I dunno if I ever registered it, as I use Sonic in Windoze now. I'll dig it out and see if there's any info on it.

It's getting a bit tricky, I cannot seem to get two dependancy files that I need

libk3bcore.so.2
libk3bplugin.so

They are contained in a newer version of K3b 1.22.X, however that RPM has dependencies for FLAC++ 2

so it's a bit of a Catch 22, will keep trying. Nero Linux is out anyway if it doesn't support straight MP3 to audio burning

Out of curiosity are you using SUSE Retail, or OSS?

OSS is what I am using, well specifiaclly I am using OpenSuSE. I should probably put that in my profile as my Distribution, come to think of it. I may go ahead and get retail later, however, to support SuSE.
I am wondering, if you tried adding a few more repos as install sources you should be able to install and/or upgrade all that with no issues at all, YAST will pull the dependencies it needs if they are available. Try adding Guru, and the extra inst sources. There is a big list of them in the first thread(sticky) in the SuSE forum. http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...hreadid=355358 It will be much easier this way, as you can search for and find almost everything, and have it gather dependencies for you.

OK, solved the problem thanks to Redshirt. I added Guru and PackMan as repo's using YasT > Source of Installation > HTTP > name of site > folder on site and everything works perfectly.
