Erratic IBM Trackpoint problem

I just installed Redhat 7.3 on a new IBM Thinkpad R31. Whenever I log into Gnome, after a few seconds the trackpoint cursor starts jumping all over the screen (usually to the upper righthand corner), various windows pop up and close, and the computer basically becomes unusable.

This doesn't happen when I use the cursor outside of X windows, or even when I load X in failsafe mode.

Any suggestions?

It sounds like X is using the wrong protocol for your 'mouse'. If you look at your X config file(s) (/etc/X11/XF86Config-4), it should tell you what device it is trying to use...is it the right one? My guess is it isn't, so make a backup copy of your X config file(s) (/etc/X11/XF86Config-4) and do an Xconfigurator to sort it.
