I have downloaded the drive that Epson says to use for this printer but I can not it to install. I am new to Mint but the down should load automatically in File Manager or am I confused? When I double click on the file it just add it to main menu under download. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
What is the filename of the driver you downloaded? if it is a .ppd file Open the printer app from settings or menu, (system-config-printer in the terminal). then add a printer. when you get to the driver page, select the import from ppd button. That should do it.
As it happens I just installed an XP-220 on Mint. The doco is appalling, but the printer (and scan) is supported ok.
You need to ensure you download the appropriate deb (these are generated from rpm using alien). Just double-click it in file manager and let it install. Then go to printer properties - it should be found when turned on.
To get the ink levels, you need to download and similarly install an epson printer utility - seems it only works if launched separately.
They also have a separate iscan utility - that's a tar.gz (I think) that contains an install.sh. Just double-click the tar.gz in file manager and expand it all. After running the install.sh and a reboot the scanner was found.
