Epson SX230 wont talk to my #!

I've installed the epson driver but the scanner wont scan to the computer neither will any documents print from the computer... probably because I have not installed the included software (for windows). I have installed XSANE but it does not see the scanner ... however, the computer CAN see an SD Card in the scanner.

So ... how do I get SX230 and computer to talk? Any ideas?

I've managed to get the printer to print from the computer. That leaves the scanner.

I've installed sane - I have xsane and simple scan front ends ... neither of them recognise the SX230.

So if anyone has any ideas please let me know. Thanks

... I've just uninstalled xsane and then installed xsane and sane (should I have them both?). But no change - xsane does not see the SX230.
Is iscan any different?

If I do a find-scanner I get this:
found USB scanner (vendor=0x04b8, product=0x0881) at libusb:001:005
... Then it is suggested that I change the permissions of it.

The README file shows an example:
chmod a+rw /proc/bus/usb/001/003
... so, presumably I change the OO3 to 005
... but unfortunately it doesn't work - so I need to be a bit more specific

Has anyone any ideas?

sure are you a member of scanner when as local user you run the command = groups?

2) turn off scanner and restart it

post in code box your last lines of /var/log/messages pls

3) I don't know your distro...mine is debian sid here is the sane output....in case you are missing a package

Code:
NOT OP output
dpkg -l | grep sane
ii libcommon-sense-perl 3.6-1 all module that implements some sane defaults for Perl programs
ii libsane:i386 1.0.22-7.3 i386 API library for scanners
ii libsane-common 1.0.22-7.3 i386 API library for scanners -- documentation and support files
ii libsane-hpaio 3.12.6-3 i386 HP SANE backend for multi-function peripherals
ii sane-utils 1.0.22-7.3 i386 API library for scanners -- utilities
ii xsane 0.998-3+b1 i386 featureful graphical frontend for SANE (Scanner Access Now Easy)
ii xsane-common
ignore the package versions pls

I also have xsltproc

4) hmmmm what did you download? There is no exact model for iscan for sx230

http://www.avasys.jp/lx-bin2/linux_e...do#productinfo

maybe sx200 or this one......Epson Stylus NX230/SX235W/TX230W/TX235W

5) open a terminal and run ...iscan

and post into a code box all output before scanning pls

Thanks for coming back aus9

1. What do I input in the terminal to run the command = groups

2. Again, I'm sorry but you will have to give me the code to get that info

3. Same response - how do I get that up on terminal screen

4. Perhaps its better to leave the iscan stuff alone for the moment and just concerntrate on getting sane to see the scanner

5. How do I run iscan ... what commend do I input

6. Xsane can now see and use my webcam so I think its up and working ok - I have un# epson in etc and input the correct IDs

Finally, 5.

Umm, I have not actually loaded iscan ... sorry if I confused you there. I downloaded sane backends 1.0.23 but got myself confused - tried to find answers - and found info on all sorts of things including iscan ... but I didn't download anything to do with it.

Something has just occurred to me ... although it may be stating the bleeding obvious ... as far as I understand, the epson SX230 being a multi purpose machine requires at least two drivers - one for the printer, and one for the scanner.

The printing part seems to be working fine.

Its the scanner thats the challenge. Now I know why I tried to install the sane backends 1.0.23.

However, could it be possible that by downloading the newer backends I have confused the computer in some way. Perhaps I should uninstall all sane stuff - then re-install them.

BINGO!!

Inputed:
sudo gedit /lib/udev/rules.d/60-libsane.rules

then:
ATTRS{idVendor}=="04b8", ATTRS{idProduct}=="0881", MODE="0664", GROUP="scanner", ENV{libsane_matched}="yes"

... and there it is!!

Thanks for all your help.

no worries I am very glad that you worked out so many things, when I first started I could not even get a graphics driver to load.

BTW if interested I use cups for printing with a driver from gutenprint, you may like to check them out?

ignore my version numbers yours will differ

Code:
dpkg -l | grep gut
ii foomatic-db-gutenprint 5.2.9-1 all OpenPrinting printer support - database for Gutenprint printer drivers
ii ijsgutenprint 5.2.9-1 i386 inkjet server - Ghostscript driver for Gutenprint
ii libgutenprint2 5.2.9-1 i386 runtime for the Gutenprint printer driver library
ii libsgutils2-2 1.33-1 i386 utilities for devices using the SCSI command set (shared libraries)
