I have recently managed after struggling for months to install Mandrake 7.2.

When first installed it booted into KDE2. After several crashes and so forth it will only get as far as the login screen of BASH.

How do I correct this?

Edit the /etc/inittab

change the line
id:5:initdefault:

Talking Boot Problem in Mandrake 7.2

There is a message along the lines of being a type 3 something. I tried changing the Init statement to 3 as the other reply said.

Still no luck it merely boots to Bash and nothing else.

the command sequence:

# dmesg|less

will let you scroll through the bootup log messages. In this listing all of the hardware data is listed, well maybe not all but...
These lines are all from before the mother of all processes 'init' is started.
Does it look good so far?
Any strange error like lines?
