english dictionary

i am in search of an english dictionary. as an english major, its essential. it can't be an online dictionary, since i take my laptop all over the place.

on XP i used microsoft bookshelf basics. it isn't hte best dictionary in the world, shabby definitions, etc... but it worked, and had a thesaurus too!

so... anyone know of any linux dictonaries or thesauri? thanks!

i went here to look for a downloadable english dictionary.

http://www.translatum.gr/dictionarie...ad-english.htm

i ended up getting this one considering the site looks out of date and there's quite a few broken links. the dictionary is old, the 1913 webster's unabridged edition, but all the pages are in html format which is nice, for me that is. if you need to search, just use your browsers search function.

http://msowww.anu.edu.au/~ralph/OPTED/v003.zip

i also made a toc page since the above archive doesn't have one and all the pages are broken down by letters. if you chose that dictionary and want a toc/index page, you can get that here:

http://www.jandjgraphics.com/Misc/toc_index.tar.gz

just unzip the dictionary zip first (v003.zip) and then extract the files from toc_index.tar.gz inside the unzipped dictionary folder. then create a link to index.html

hope that helps you.
