EndNote in Wine? Alternatives? Methadone for proprietary software ;)

Howdy,

I'm on the cusp of convincing the management to let me set up my own Linux system here. We are a major psychiatric research laboratory and our work is meant for publication in journals. The only barrier is that as an office-wide policy, we use EndNote to manage bibliographies. I must be able to get formatted bibliographies to other staff members, and transfer them back and forth (meaning one person works on it, sends it back, I work on it some more, rinse, repeat). Most other people here use MacIntosh (OS X), I use Windows (not my choice).

I've done a little research and there's no EndNote for Linux. A key thing is finding out about integration with OpenOffice.

Here are my alternatives:
1. Run EndNote under Wine with OpenOffice Writer (will that work?)
2. Run EndNote under a virtual machine Windows environment with MS Word.
3. Dual-boot

I don't want to do 3, since that would involve using the NT Loader, etc., although I'll consider it if it becomes the only option. Virtual machine is something I'm unfamiliar with. Will option 1 work? Will Endnote under wine integrate with OpenOffice Writer?

Keep in mind when you reply that if I totally had my way, I would be using Latex and Bibtex and not bothering with all this; however, I don't make policy here, I'm doing my best to change things from the bottom up. I'm doing my best to concoct a win-win solution so I can get the ball rolling and show these people how much money they're wasting In other words, my ultimate goal is to get the junkies off of EndNote.

Thanks,
Joel

Can’t recommend anything personally, as I just don’t use that kind of software. However, after having a quick look around I found this page.

http://wwwsearch.sourceforge.net/bib/openbib.html

It has an interesting collection of links to standards and software as well as some general links. I noticed there was a Zope module with EndNote compatibility. Might be worth a look.

Good Luck

Update: I do have Endnote 8.0 working successfully under Wine in Slackware 11.0. It took a little wrangling, as I first tried to install it under a directory for which I had no write access; I had to install it as user instead of as root.
