encrypting external drive - truecrypt or easycrypt?

I'm using ubuntu 9.10 & I'd like to encrypt an external hard drive.

I'd prefer to install from the repositories if possible & I notice that easycrypt is on the ubuntu repository & that it is supposed to be a GUI for truecrypt.

Does anyone have any experience of using either of them with 9.10?

Thanks for any suggestions you could give.

I used truecrypt a couple of years ago and whilst playing about with it accidentally encrypted a nearly full 500G drive and didn't make a note of the password, couldn't retrieve my data.
So unless you really do need to encrypt a whole drive I would tend to go for folder encryption or virtual drives, either way be VERY careful!

Obviously.

This is an old 30G drive I want to use for travelling & I want to encrypt in case of loss or theft. I'd have at least 2 unencrypted copies available at home. I'm very particular about backups.

I'm just wondering what is the easiest way to get encrypting on an external HD up & running on ubuntu, preferably from repositories.
