emerge sync is hurting me!

rsync: connection unexpectedly closed (2830473 bytes read so far)
rsync error: error in rsync protocol data stream (code 12) at io.c(189)
>>> retry ...

I get this error everytime I try to sync. It wasnt really a problem but now I cant hardly emerge anything without getting a "!!! Security Violation: A file exists that is not in the manifest." error.

Please help!

Do you have a fast internet connection?

Try adding this to /etc/make.conf

RSYNC_TIMEOUT="500"

Let me know how you go

Im checking it out now, my comp is slow so it takes a while to sync. =/ But so far so good. I'll let you know how it comes out.

(By the way, I have a cable connection, a rather poor one but a cable connection none the less.)

No go, same error during sync. Is there a way I could manually sync? Or re-install portage?
Or just fix this!?

I googled the error you were getting and it returned loads of pages with people who had similar problems. From what i could see they all related to either slow internet or a slow machine.

You could do it manually, all emerge does is wget, so you could wget the latest portage files from distfiles.gentoo.org/snapshots/

Good luck, let me know how you go.

I found the problem! I have a few folders full of corrupted data in /usr/portage/sys-fs! Im guessing from an incomplete sync or something. I cant overwrite them when I sync or delete them, even as root. I decided to delete my portage files and just untar a new snapshot but It seg faulted at /usr/portage/sys-fs, twice, so I go in there and look around and see some ebuilds yada yada, and try to delete one, it says I have no Permission to do that, but wait a sec, Im root! I do whatever I want! But I still cant delete these, any ideas?

Not even as root? wow.

Actually come to think of it I have had something similar before where I couldn't delete files as root. I ended up booting off the live cd and mounting the partitions and deleting it in there.

You might want to give that a go. Something sounds stuffed though.

Let me know how you go.

Sorry for the bump... But I finnaly figured it out. Broken files were just bad parts in the filesystem, I dont know how they got there but a fsck.reiserfs later and I'm synced and ready to roll, thanks to everyone that helped! (Mostly TheRealDeal) I owe ya one.
