emerge message about config files updating

After emerging any package, emerge prints the following message:

* GNU info directory index is up-to-date.
* IMPORTANT: 4 config files in /etc need updating.
* Type emerge --help config to learn how to update config files.

I've read emerge --help and FAQ about package management in gentoo, but still don't get how to update them and why are those need to be updated.

I'd appreciate if someone could make a situation on those configuration files a bit clearer for me or supplied me with a good information source.

Thank you!

And make sure the one's you change to the newer version is not a file that you have edited like /etc/fstab or you will get the default.Just take your time and look at each one until you get used to running etc-update.Don't put it off it is something that you must do.
This will help you to see the differences;
