The way I was envisioning is that each player has a database with each of their characters information stored in the database. When I develop a multiplayer/PvP portion to the game, I will have a server-side java app tell the cleint side to access its database for character info. The reason I want to set it up this way is so I can keep as much of the data processing to client rather than the server.
BTW I am in the process of familiarizing myself with JDBC
