Email server

We have a small network to serve 6 clients (5 windoz + 1 MDK 10) and have just scrapped out w2k server for Mandrake 9.2. The purpose of the server is to serve files and emails. File sharing is up and running, and Samba is working fine. Now it's time to create the email server.

Our current email server is a product called 'workgroupmail' that is running in the background of a windows machine. It works fine but unfortunately is does not run under Wine so it's time for something more secure and stable. Our ADSL provider does not allow us to have unrestricted SMTP 25 so we can't really point our MX record to our server to receive emails via SMTP. I was able to configure Postfix to send our outgoing mail via SMTP to our ISP so that their servers can rely our outgoing emails. We have a domain 'whatever@mydomain.com' which gives us a pop3 mailbox. So here are the issues that I need to address:

-one pop3 email address at our ISP that must be downloaded and then those emails need to be distributed to the six local clients. Our windoze email server allows us to do this. I know this can and is done everyday in Linux.

-Present email server has an ldap server from which we have one shared address book. I want to have the same and seems that Openldap is the key. I have the address book contents already in an 'ldif' file and would like to migrate it to Openldap and allow the users to see it and make their own additional entries.

-spam, virus, relay protection for all in and outgoing mail.

-have the server keep or archive a copy of every email that is sent and received in case needed

-give the users access to webmail so they can view their mail from any machine outside the office.

-our email clients are Mozilla 1.6 messenger.

So now I need your suggestions on software to be used, setup, your experiences and any help/tips you guys have.

I'm a newbie and I want to learn all that I can!

Thanks in advance.

Please do not post the same thread in more than one forum. Picking the most relevant forum and posting it once there makes it easier for other members to help you and keeps the discussion all in one place.

The easiest thing, if you don't want to roll your own, is to look into Kerio's mail server. I use it on OSX and it's very good. They also have a helpful support staff.

Please try to refrain from posting to threads that have been marked as double posts as they will get closed once a moderator of the forum has gotten to it.
