Email and spam in different folders using spamassassin
 

I have a question regarding spamassassin and email. I'm using Debian, Spamassassin, Exim and procmail. When spamassassin detects spam, it stores it in a file called 'spam-caught', per a line in my .procmailrc file. When I check my email, spam in the 'spam-caught' file is trapped and doesn't appear in my inbox (thank God).

What I've seen on some systems is when SpamAssassin is used, a subfolder inside the inbox gets created and the spams get stored there. When users check their email, their messages go to Inbox and spams get added to the spam folder.

What I'm asking is if there's a way to create subfolders inside the directory where emails get spooled so when people check their email they also get spams in a folder. My email files are stored in /var/mail/<username>.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Maybe what you're referring to is retrieving your mail via IMAP. If $HOME/spam-caught is an IMAP folder to which you are subscribed, then you would see the kind of behavior you described (at least, with WU IMAP).

yea imap for a remote connection and for a local connection for instance in pine you can setup a bunch of folders i'm sure in other clients you can as well

I think you're right about using IMAP. I don't care for IMAP, tho' -- every time I've used it I've had bad results. I guess I'll live with it for the time being. Thanks for the info.
