Editing properties of your terminal/shell ?

I was wondering on how i can edit the properties of my shell or terminal whatever you want to call it.
Now my shell shows the complete path to the directory i,m working in of the complete path starting from my home directory but this sometimes can be e very long string so how can i edit it so it only shows the last directory your working in or a maximum amount of characters?
I know it's possible somehow but i don't know how, I switched from mandrake to suse and in mandrake it was only showing the last directory.

THX

Try giving a look in .bashrc directory in your home directory.

You can find a list of Bash prompt options here: - look at the "Customization Options" section.

Thanks a combination of the two did the trick.
I only had to edit the PS1 variable.
