Editing Hassles - Audacity 1.3.2 beta, SuSE 10.0

So I've successfully installed Audacity 1.3.2 beta under SuSE v10.0, and generally it seems to be working just fine -- I can import audio files, play them, convert them from .mp3 to .wav, and so on. What I cannot do however is any editing, the menu is just grayed out. The editing toolbar buttons (eg, 'cut') are similarly unavailable.

Am I just making some bonehead mistake, or are others seeing this? Pretty much all I'm trying to do is clip off the final few seconds of a recording I've got, which is about as basic as you can get.

I realize 1.3.2 is the development version, but links to the previous 1.2.6 (stable) version just redirect to 1.3.2. Obviously, I can use another editor such as KWave, but I've used Audacity in the past and think it's a pretty decent editor, so I'd prefer to stick with it possible.

Any suggestions are welcome, thanks

This would be a pretty boneheaded mistake, and I apologize if it's silly, but did you "select" an area to be edited?

*slapping myself in the forehead*

Gaaah -- I am so embarrassed. I have made any number of stupid mistakes before, but I think I've just set a new personal record.

Many thanks for giving me a clue rickh.
