Editing audio files (.wav, .au, etc.) and converting to .mp3
Platform: Ubuntu 9.04. I have a number of .wav files created using the arecord program (version 1.0.18), which does not save in .mp3 format. I record a new one almost every day. Sometimes I wish to put these onto my .mp3 player, and usually a .mp3 recorded directly as a .mp3 file (using other software) is only about 1/2 to 2/3 the size of a .wav file of the same content. However, when I use Audacity (version 1.3.7) to load the .wav file and export it as a .mp3 file, it keeps the same size as the .wav format. Does someone know of a way to convert .wav to .mp3 in a more compact file size? Frugal use of storage space on the mp3 player is the objective. I have also notice that if I have an original .mp3 file and load it into Audacity for editing, then re-export it as .mp3, the file size is increased significantly.
