I'm asking because Eclipse is relatively easy to install (assuming you have downloaded the correct version from eclipse.org - which you aparently have: you have read the readme). If you unpack the archive, the root directory should contain a start script. Executing this from the commandline should start eclipse regardless where you have installed it.
If you are usign a distribution like opensuse things are even easier: just tell the installer (yast in the case of opensuse) to install the package eclipse and you'll find an appropriate menu entry in your desktop.
