Eclipse Can't Find Java

I just downloaded Eclipse and I get this error when I try to launch it:

Quote:
A Java Runtime Environment (JRE) or Java Development Kit (JDK)
must be available in order to run Eclipse. No Java virtual machine
was found after searching the following locations:
/home/jeff/programs/eclipse/jre/bin/java
'java' in your current PATH
I have the 1.4.2 SDK installed, and it is definitely in my PATH:

Quote:
echo $PATH
/usr/local/bin:/usr/local/sbin:/usr/bin:/usr/sbin:/bin:/sbin:/usr/bin/X11:/usr/games:/usr/java/j2sdk1.4.2_06/bin
Does GNOME use a different path than bash or something? Any ideas?

You have to set JAVA_HOME environmental variable. You can do it in /etc/profile for all users or .bash_profile for yourself only.

JAVA_HOME=/usr/java/j2sdk1.4.2_06; export JAVA_HOME

Then do this for the setting to take effect:

source /etc/profile

I did that and it's still not working. What else could it be?

EDIT:
It works fine if I run it from the command line, but I can't launch it from the GNOME GUI... what's going on?

Did you try logging out of Gnome then back in? I'm using Eclipse myself and i have no problem launching it with a Gnome launcher so i'm pretty sure the problem isn't Gnome.

try doing a
Code:
$ source /etc/profile
and then running eclipse.
if it works you'll probs have to add this line in your default bashrc file in future
