Hi!

I-m using this computer here at home with eclipse juno. I have noticed that after a while of eclipse usage my computer starts to behave more slowly (the same thing happened with indigo, by the way). i just noticed that when the computer is behaving like this Xorg is at almost 100% and remains like that until it becomes responsive again... but it only happens when I'm on eclipse... and it's not because of lack of memory. I took this from top when one of these episodes was taking place:

As you can see there's some memory left for it to work, right (591 + 617 + 1160)? I have this same exact distro at my job (kubuntu 12.10 and it's a computer with just 2 GBs of ram at my job) and this doesn't happen.... given that it's Xorg that's apparently causing this I'm wondering if it's the nvidia module (the computer at my job? I don't know what it is exactly but it's not nvidia)? How can I make sure about it?

Just FYI, I'm running Eclipse Juno on my notebook using an nVidia GPU and it's running fine.
BUT: I have to admit that since I upgraded to Juno when I switch virtual desktop I have to wait for ~1.5 seconds before that the different windows of the IDE are rendered (white window before that) - don't like it but it's not so bad for me to start investigating it.

Perhaps it's due to some file that you have in your workspace? What happens if you move your workspace directory somewhere else and start Eclipse (if you already had a workspace and just upgraded Eclipse).
Otherwise you could probably try to start Eclipse through "Valgrind" and see what the app is doing (beware - it will be much slower if you start it through Valgrind)?

Look at the 3 attachments. They are 3 screenshots separated by a few seconds during one of this crazy eclipse crawling episodes where you can see top and gkrellm showing the activity. What's most telling (at least to me) is that it's Xorg that's frying the CPU, not eclipse (at least, not the process). Now, right now I have eclipse running just like that. You want me to do something on it so we can see what's going on at a deeper level? I think I'll just send a crtl-Z to eclipse to see what happens. Hope you can come up with something clever for diagnosis.

Isn't as well the rest really weird? E.g. Firefox shouldn't use any CPU (if no anim-gifs, javascript & Co are running).
Meaning: I would shut down anything that generates load before focusing on a single app.

Well.... firefox no CPU? Not in my world... not in any computer I've used in the last what? 8 years (cause it was mozilla before and it ate CPU as well)... I guess having JS heavy sites like gmail open all the time don't help but still.

Focusing on one single application: I close eclipse and it goes back to normal. I start eclipse again and it's fine... but after a while of fiddling with my application (it's not 5 minutes.... it could take 20-30 minutes to start lagging past my patience) it's back to crawling. What would you think?

I'll test what you say of putting all activities to a minimum to see what happens (I'll test if it happens with chromium as well).

With Firefox I meant that it should usually use just ~0 to max ~8% CPU when not doing anything special and displaying just a few animated gifs of some sites. Not something like 15-25% as in your case.
