1- Can we edit or change squid.conf or any otehr
file, How ?
by simply using an editor. there are several on your sys. some you can use in X others are useful at the shell. i use one called "vim".

2- can it work as active directory /Domain for
windows users, how ?
read documentation about samba and relatetd sw.

3- i was working on mailman mailing list server
project for that i was configuring, DNS, Qmail,
Squid, Apcache etc, But here these all thing
almost ready , now can i install and configure
sme server as mailman server too, How?
look at the documentation.

4- how to access shell ?
you may start using "bash". it's defacto standard on most linux distributions. this is what you get if you start up linux without a grapical interface. if you are in X start "xterm" or try to find something like "console"/"terminal",...

5- where to get compelete user/adminitration manula ?
have a look at www.tldp.org . there are useful other sites on the net. google for linux crash-course ,...

6- Can we add any other feature in it like in webmine
can be add new module for any new supported
product ?
yes. you can write your own scripts for nearly everything. read the manual/ have a look at those scripts already there.

6- can it work behing parent proxy/ Or Can it work
with onyway internet via Satellite system
should (i asume you mean parent caches?). depents on the configuration. sattelite is difficult ;-) you don't have upload.

7- Am i right , as i explore it in one day, its look
like that its compelete web based solution for web
hosting, ftp server, email server, internet proxy
for internet user ?, for both internal and
external users
yes, linux definitely is a "web-based" os. for the interrest: about 69% of the sites you're watching via internet are hosted on apache, more than 70% of emails a routed via a linux box.

8- Can i host more then 1 website on same server with
one static IP
yes. but, with one ip only, you'll have to use different ports for each site. there is a feature called "virtual server" you can use to build virual ather interfaces on just on interface (ethernet f.ex.).

1 vi or vim
8 can go the way we used to in the old days i.e.
http://bull.test.com/~tux
and in tux have an public folder with an index.html burried in it (tux being a home dir)

Hello
thanks mritch
for your detaild answer , I think you misunderstood my question , i am not asking that all above feature come with linux OS, yes ofcource it has i Know.

But Here i want to ask for SME SERVER (Its special product based on Redhat Linux) vists following sites for more detail

http://www.e-smith.org/intro/
http://contribs.org/modules/news/

I think its realy great product for whom they want to quick replacemect for there current Windows baed Server.

Please again see my 1st post for question related with SME Server

thanks

oh i see.
i havn't done a very close look at that project. anyway, since it seems to be just another linux based sys i think it will not make any difference. if you are searching something to replace some m$-sw nearly any modern linux distribution will give you a stable and fast solution (as you may already know).
i prefer linux over every other os, and since everything that was mentioned on their site is defacto standard - so, for example firewalling, proxying, serving data for anyOS isn't a task if you know your os - i keep using my debian and i am able to experiment/expand it with new sw/ideas.
main goal of that sys seems to be easy maintaince, but i think i couldn't get happy with it since i use to do a lot of things by doing the necessery scripting myself and i don't like os's doing that for me ;-)
anyway this seems to be a nice solution for people who don't want to get in touch with the underlying os too much and have a all in one server solution (btw. nfs wouldbe really useful) - aka people wanting a fw/gw(/mail?) to switch easily between the pc and their dsl. the problem with this kind of solution is when you want to actualy come in touch with the underlying os, since then there are much to much configfiles to handle and it could be difficult to apply new features that are not implemented at their project.

anyway - it's sure worth a try.

hello

thanks for reply
yes you r right and i agree with that this not a professional way to use this kind of ready software for some specific tasks.
I also user of redhat linux but not familieur with Scripting, Commands etc so faceing many problem during setinng up any software like, squid, Dns, Dhcp, mail server etc
But i would be happy if Setup my own linux based solution for Smmal organization tasks
Like:.....

User managment (with secuty control)
Internal and external mail
Proxy (internet sharing with security )
Web hosting
Mailing list manager (like mailman)
DNS and DHCP Server
Network printing

I am working for all above task with my redhat linux 7.3 with default kernal
and these are my current post for help you can see
1-
http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...t=apache+guied
2-
http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...t=apache+guied

All above configurtion requierd for mailman mailing list manager , the mailman requierd Apache, Qmail, DNS, , but and i am trying configured but u can see in above post link i am stucked

Thats why i Like SME Server in few Minuts the server was reay with Squid, DNS, DHCP, Qmail, SMB, MySQL, Apache etc
Now just i am searching resources for mailman with SME Server

But i Would be more happy if some one guied to settig up this Setup on my redhat linux 7.3 machine

thanks

i stumpled over a guide on setting up rh a few days ago.
"Securing & Optimizing Linux: The Ultimate Solution" v2
http://tldp.org/guides.html
you'll find relevant information there.

there also are a lot of other good guides you may want to read & have a look at various howtos (which may be on your system allready) you can find on the link above.

mobassir 08-18-2004 07:31 AM

hello
For some reason i had to come back on redhat 9 for mailman mailing list manager setup
i am configuring mailman with following link help
http://www.vpac.org/VDT/Mailman/INSTALL

in the middle of file some option are which i unable to understand what does it maen and how it will work , i tried some but fail
the step are :
Configure your web server to give $prefix/cgi-bin permission to
run CGI scripts. You probably need to be root to do this.

The line you should add might look something like the following
(with the real absolute directory substituted for $prefix, of
course):

Exec /mailman/* $prefix/cgi-bin/*
or:
ScriptAlias /mailman/ $prefix/cgi-bin/

Consult your web server's documentation for details.

any body descrieb it what does it mean and how it work, i am stucked at this point and need help

regards
