easy and dynamic GPRS connection

Hello,

I use a small debian system (without gui) to connect to gprs/umts/whatever networks. Currently i use a modem, which is visible as a /dev/ttyUSB* device, and pppd. But it's very hard to configure pppd for a specific provider.

I think there should be much easier ways. E.g. in android systems there's a "/etc/apns-conf.xml", which contains all connection information for many providers.

My question is now:
Is it possible to setup a debian, on which i can insert a sim card (no matter which provider) and then connect to the internet without to change manually something? Of course the connection info has to be based on something like the "apns-conf.xml", but i never use exotic providers.

I saw that there is "wvdial", but it looks like that it isn't possible to configure it as i want.

best regards
toredo
