Unhappy e-learning management tools ?

I was required to build an e-learning web-site. Which use the following tools as development: (version is of course the latest) to store the entire e-learning modules:

Slackware Linux
Apache
MySQL
PHP
BIND

But, the question is I am searching the appropriate tools to handle my entire e-learning contents which store all the e-learning materials. The main functions should allow registered users to search available e-learning materials and some sort of customization control panel. I am really getting nowhere.. what is the best e-learning management tools should I use. I search over the frestmeat but was don't know the exact usage of it, also there a bunch of hits and was really difficult to choose. That why I am here calling for help.

By the way, I am not a hard-core php programmer and was not able to create from scratch. I was looking for a open source web-management tools..

Thanks a million..

Interesting task.

However, the big question is if are you supposed to develop a virtual classroom for long distance and OnDemand education, or simply a web site that, with a bunch of features put together, in the end will be called a "e-learning web site"?

If you're aiming for the first option, you've got a very very long way to go, and it would be pretty much pointless going into details here.

If you're aiming for the second option, I'd say grab whatever PHP/CGI/C/etc, programs/modules you like and find suitable, such as zope (CMS), phpMember (User Management), wpQuiz (Web Quiz), phpBB (Bulletin Board), Upload Manager, etc, etc. Put it all together on one site, and ta-da, there's your dynamic e-learning web site.

/j.
