dvipdf not picking up fonts, but dvips is?

At first i didn't have "times.sty", but i used apt-file and found the package i needed. now dvips is finding the fonts find, but dvipdf is giving the following error.

Code:
dvips: Font cmr17 at 8000 not found; scaling 600 instead.
dvips: Such scaling will generate extremely poor output.
dvips: Font cmr12 at 8000 not found; scaling 600 instead.
dvips: Font cmbx9 at 8000 not found; scaling 600 instead.
dvips: Font cmbx12 not found, using cmr10 instead.
dvips: Design size mismatch in font cmbx12
dvips: Checksum mismatch in font cmbx12
dvips: Font cmr10 at 8000 not found; scaling 600 instead.
dvips: Font cmti10 at 8000 not found; scaling 600 instead.
dvips: Font cmr7 at 8000 not found; scaling 600 instead.
dvips: Font cmr6 at 8000 not found; scaling 600 instead.
dvips: Font cmr8 at 8000 not found; scaling 600 instead.
dvips: Font cmmi10 at 8000 not found; scaling 600 instead.
I went to sort it using the listed here but it has already been applied (the file already contained the stanza):

Anyone know whats going wrong?

Thanks

James

Try pdflatex instead if you want to make PDF files from your TeX/LaTeX source. I use only pdflatex when I want a PDF file from a LaTeX document.

I'm having the same symptoms that the original poster is. This is a Libranet/Debian -> Sid system. What does work is to compile the LaTeX source into a dvi file. Then view the dvi files as usual. Then use dvips to convert the dvi file to a ps file. Then use ps2pdf to convert the ps file to a pdf file. The alternative solution given by the other replay also works (use pdflatex), but that does not give you a dvi file with which to view to check for errors.

Oddly, I am not experiencing the same symptoms on another similarly set up box.

Hope this helps -- or at least gets the attention of someone who knows how to fix the error.

hmm.. i've done all my apt-upgrade stuff, and added a few other packages and the problem seems to have disappeared, except this last little message..

Code:
LaTeX Font Warning: Font shape `OMS/ptm/bx/n' undefined
(Font) using `OMS/ptm/m/n' instead
(Font) for symbol `textbraceleft' on input line 236.
I think i installed a few packages like tetex-extra and tetex-base.. maybe try those..

I think I have the problem solved, though not delicately:

I used apt-get remove to delete every tetex related package on my system, and then apt-get -t unstable install all the same parts.

So far so good.

i'm only using the unstable release anyway, so i'd imagine that my packages are all similar
