dvdrip and vobcopy -- both freeze up

Not sure if this post goes to software or hardware?

Anyway -- I was able to install dvdrip and vobcopy on my mandrake 10 install.

THere seems to be a problem with both proggys freezing up...

I started with dvdrip -- got all the requirements/installed the app/set it up. I run AMD/nvidia.

I made one test project using mostly defeaults... the app froze, I had to reboot. I tried it again with some different settings for the 2nd project -- it froze.

So, I downloaded vobcopy, installed it, and ran it from konsole...I ran with no switches. This also froze.

So, I am wondering if anybody else has experienced similar trying to copy their dvd's. WHat did you do to solve the problem.

At this point I am thinking there could be any number of factors causing the freezes. Any help would be appreciated. Also, what more do you need from me, in terms of specific information?

This aspect of my computing is the last step to saying goodbye to windows -- If I can copy my dvd's I will have no reason whatsoever to run windows.

Thanks,

machiner

Are you sure the DVD drive itself works under Linux? Can you stick a video DVD in the drive and watch it properly? Try this software, it does a good job for DVD ripping:
http://mplayerhq.hu
MPlayer is a media player (the best one!), but it comes with something called MEncoder, which can rip things to MPEG files.

Thganks for your quick reply -- yes. I can pop a dvd in and watch it under linux. I have mplayer, but the default video player, Totem, plays my dvd's as well
