Question DVD-RW drive recognizes DVD-RW disc?

Hi,

I purchased a pack of DVD-RW Discs that my computer does not even acknowledge there is a disc in the tray. My Pc is a "Dell Dimension 9100." I am running a dual boot of PCLinuxOS-KDE and Manjaro 0.8.10 xfce. Neither side recognizes a disc in the tray.

I can play prerecorded dvd's using that tray but it won't read there is a blank dvd-rw disc in the tray. If the tray has the 'RW' symbol then it should recognize the disc be it dvd+rw or dvd-rw?

Code:
sudo lshw -html > mysystem.html
open ~/mysystem.html w\browser, navigate to id: cdrom
see "capabilities:"

What's it show?

You may have to install lshw on your system.
See manual for specifics.

Have you tested for the presence of the blank disc with your burning program?

Blank discs will not be recognized in your file manager (or via normal command line file system tools) because they do not contain a file system.

Edit: Some desktop environments deliver a pop-up when you insert a blank disk, but that behavior very much depends on what desktop you are using.
