dvd::rip cannot read TOC

Well, I have been trying to get dvd::rip to work for the past..ohhh...7-8 hours, i finally got it installed along with all the deps transcode and all. and when I go to the Rip Title tab, and click Read DVD table of contents i recieve the error...

Job 'Determine number of titles' failed.

Executed command: dr_exec tcprobe -H 10 -i /dev/dvd && echo DVDRIP_SUCCESS

Last output was:

(dvd_reader.c) no support for DVD reading configured - exit.
(iodump.c) unable to open directory "/dev/dvd"

this is pointing to the correct device, and i have linked it and even tried changing /dev/dvd to /dev/hda (the device my dvd drive is) and even /dev/cdrom. it gives me the same error message everytime. also xine and mplayer cannot play dvds anymore i recieve this in my terminal

bash-3.00# xine
This is xine (X11 gui) - a free video player v0.99.3.
(c) 2000-2004 The xine Team.
Xlib: extension "GLX" missing on display ":0.0".

libdvdnavVDOpenFileUDF:UDFFindFile /VIDEO_TS/VIDEO_TS.BUP failed
libdvdread: Can't open file VIDEO_TS.IFO.
Segmentation fault

any help on getting these problems resolved would be greatly appreciated.

PS: I should also add that I attempted to switch to acidrip as I thought maybe it would have better luck and I have mplayer and mencoder. it compiled tested and installed fine. but when i run it....well....

bash-3.00# acidrip
Can't locate Gtk2.pm in @INC (@INC contains: /usr/lib/perl5/5.8.6/i486-linux /usr/lib/perl5/5.8.6 /usr/lib/perl5/site_perl/5.8.6/i486-linux /usr/lib/perl5/site_perl/5.8.6 /usr/lib/perl5/site_perl .) at /usr/lib/perl5/site_perl/5.8.6/AcidRip/interface.pm line 1.

again any help getting either ripping programs to work would be greatly appreciated.

See: http://www.exit1.org/dvdrip/doc/faq.cipp#faq18

i'm not familar with slackware, but if it's any further help my gentoo system required a system build flag to build properly (USE="dvdread") when building transcode, and also had to be rebooted before dvd::rip would work.

Last output was:

Make sure you are running dvd::rip as root or have given proper access to the /dev/dvd symlink and the device itself to the user you are running it as.

Read the FAQs. They clearly say this is not a problem.

http://www.exit1.org/dvdrip/doc/faq.cipp#faq4

I think you may be having a different problem in addition to that one which is fine.
