http://www.ssma.us/debian_media.html

in linux i justed used DVD::RIP to do just that, but i have found it was having issues with some of the encrypted DVDs out there. so i went back to windows and use a combination of AnyDVD and DVDShrink to deal with those kinds of DVDs.

as for playback i prefer kde and kaffeine for my playback. that link tells you how i set up a media box a while back. bit out of date, but the basic steps are the same.

I have an HDTV and a Nvidia GeForce 7950 GT with HDTV out. Can I connect the two or do I need a special card? And also how I can connect the audio up? My motherboard is an Asus P5B Deluxe with integrated audio that has s/pdif out.

that card should handle HDMI, if not most HDTVs have a standard port to accept direct from the PC so you should be good.

as for sound, what i ended up buying was an adapter from RadioShack that plugs into my sound card and then has A/V cables out (red/white) and i plug those into my stero, but you should be able to plug them into your HDTV too.
