Linux:
Fedora Core 6 i586 works!
Fedora Core 6 i686 not working
Fedora 7 64 bit not working

Problem:

Either I get "Uncompressing Linux Kernel" and it just stays there forever, or I get "Brought up 2 CPUs" and it hangs there as well.

I have an Asus K8N DL with 2 Gig ram and dual Opteron 240 cpus. I don't have problems with i686 or 64bit distros (those I've tried). I have not tried Fedora. So, either you have a hardware problem, or a Fedora problem.

Try some liveCD's in i686 and 64bit to see if you have the same problem as with Fedora.

Note: with dual cpus, you need a SMP enabled kernel to be able to use both cpus. That may also apply to the 64 bit version (I'm not certain on that point).

I tried the system one CPU at a time to see if a CPU was defective. Finally, somehow, both CPUs are once more detected and this time the kernel passes the Brought up 2 CPUs and it work .

A new problem arises, the DVD boots up and then says that it doesn't detect it anymore by requiring a Fedora X DVD. On the verbose screen it says that it has CRC problems.

I will look into the boot up DVD problems, but thank you both for the suggestions and good news.

Is it possible that having non-matching CPUs can create problems?
