ok, unplugged all the drives bar the windows disk LIKE I SHOULD HAVE DONE IN THE FIRST PLACE and reinstalled windows. After I plugged all the disks back in and reset my boot order grub boots both linux and windows fine.
Serves me right for being lazy in the first place.
