I did get DRi to work but the process it too much of a hassle. Does anyone know of a DRI alternative, like how Mesa is to OpenGL or ASLA, the universal audio driver.

i completely agree though. your two options are hardware rendering (or Direct Rendering Interface... DRI) and software rendering... which sucks.
I think it's worth setting up DRI. Once you've set it up once or twice, it's not too hard. Make sure that you've got the module(s) for your video card loaded, the DRM module, and the agpgart module... I think that should be it. Load the glx and dri modules in your xorg.conf file, make sure the users that want to use DRI are in the 'video' group (if your distro has this feature) and that should be it.
You may need to alter some permissions on some /dev/ files, but I can't recall their names right now, as I'm at work (using windows.)
