Downloading pictures from Olympus 720C UZ

I have an Olympus C-720C UZ camera and cannot find a Linux a file viewing software that will unload the files from the camera other than through a memory card reader (ridiculously slow and mostly unsuccessful). The operating system I run is Linspire 5.0. Thank you for your suggestions.

After plugging in your camera, run 'dmesg'. Look near the bottom for any lines describing your camera and post them here.
