downloading files from linux server

hi all,

i've programmed a small up/download tool in php running on a lamp-server.
now, when i want to download the files from the server through the web-interface, in the middle of the process the download freezes.
freezes means the connection doesn't break, the transfer doesn't end, it just 'hangs' in the middle of the file.

as i've seen during my research, there exists a simliar problem with some JPG files with embedded XML code, because the browser tries to interpret the XML part and hangs.

but how is this with files? did anybody have a problem like this? to make it worse, this just happens with some files (mainly with PPT-Files). any idea?

(i've posted this already in the programming thread, but here maybe it's the better place because it can't have sth to do with php. i've tested the script on other servers, and there it was running without problems...)
