Download Accelerator Challenges.

I tried the following download accelerators for Linux with the following challenges:
1. d4x
Starts with a good speed for dialup like 14k/s but then drops to 2.5K/s which is normal in my line.

2. Prozilla
It gets realy wacky when the ftp download server goes down. Finishes the download erraneously but says everything is OK.

Any solutions are welcome.

If you are downloading files that are already compressed (video or audio), no download accelerator can speed it up appreciably and are pretty much a wasted effort, if not for added features such as 'resume download'.

Use a lower-level application to see just how fast things are being downloaded; 14KB/sec on dialup is only possible if the file being downloaded is raw text and the modem negotiated with at least v.42bis or MNP 5

It was an ISO image. Also the modem is an US Robotics. Well over 6 years old.
Don't know the otehr details.
