Dot Net Program?

I know this might sound kind of dumb but I just learned C# and I would like to use the programs I make with C# on Linux. From what I can remember .net is like java so it can run on any system that has the framework installed (right?). So is there a way to install the .net framework on linux?

Thanks

get the mono framework. There is also monodevelop for an ide. The basic framework is done. You are still out of luck if you are looking to create System.Windows.Forms. That is still a work-in-progress. Check it out though.

.NET for Linux won't work, its a Microsoft product, design, implementation, etc. I've seen or heard that some have possibly ported it over but to me that would seem like a hassle. Try doing a search on a project called Mono or DotGNU which is the OpenSource alternative to Microsoft's .NET framework.

Here is the dotgnu.org site though: http://www.dotgnu.org/

Thank you for the quick response. What I'm looking to do is to create a full screen application, I have it pretty much done in Windows but I have a feeling I'm going to have to change things around if I want to use it in Linux.

This GNU thing. That's the way that Linux makes "windows" then right?

oh yeah, duh! I was slightly confused there for a sec... All better now!

On to attempt at making my own distribution of Linux, I found this "Linux from Scratch" it appears to be what I want. I am reading it's nice manual now!

I need help again. I have just recently purchased Visual Studio .NET 2003 and I would love to build Linux programs in it.

I went to mono and found their windows installer and installed. It took some time but I finally figured out that it would compile my C# programs by doing the mcs program.cs

I downloaded and installed the GtK# thing (version .93) for windows.

Now in Visual Studio I want to add a reference to GtK# and include this in my C# files to make windows and such. I looked at the samples included with GtK# specifically the HelloWorld.cs. I noticed this file has "using Gtk".
When I try to compile this file using mono it gives me an error about how I'm missing the reference for Gtk. I searched the GtK# folder for a Gtk.dll but came up empty handed. I tried to reference some of the files in the Gtk# folder that sounded like they would work but still nothing.

What am I doing wrong?

Thanks
