im not sure if im going to make myself look a complete plonker. I am trying to play a AVI video and all i keep getting is
"download Domplayer.exe"
This is a *exe apps for windows only i am running WINE but the exe apps keeps crashing. I would like to know if there is a way of just playing it in movie play like all the other avi files. This don't happen on all the avi files just some of them.
To me it looks like they are scrambled in some way. Any help would be nice.
Ubuntu 7.10
Gnome 2.20.1
Totem Movie Player 2.20.0
Thank you for your reply, I have indeed tried other palyers. I have tried to use DeVeDe to convert the avi to a DVD format, but i looks like the avi file is encrypted and now is showing only 13 mb. the downloaded file is about 700 mb.
Is there some sort of CodeX file that is needed? or am i barking up the wrong tree?
Just to confirm, the video does in fact play on another machine, Windows or Mac doesn't matter as long as it plays?
Codex is always a fun and up hill battle.. but i will give you some suggestions. Keeping the video in the simplest form is always the best way, ie. basic and simple codex and format. Then getting it to play on any machine is the next step to confirm that it indeed does play. Every time i have had troubles with movie files i usually eventually get them to work in Gentoo. I would confirm that you have all the very standard Codex installed for Gentoo that is:
libdvdcss and libdvddread - for DVD playback
xvid - Divx and Avi files
Probably similar Ubuntu codex. Next part is always my favorite part, finding a media player that will read your file. When i am troubleshooting an video file problem i usually get ready to test it with about 9-10 different players, because if you don't know who created it, you won't know exact codex.
Try these players:
Kplayer
Codeine
Kaffeine
Xine
MPlayer
VLC
(not all but notable ones)
Now after you have exhausted your media player options, it's time for the super fun part, trying to convert this to a read-able format. This is not a fun task. If possible at this point either: re-download the video in another format or contact the person who made this and ask them what's up! If not start research the daunting task of converting a video, if you have a Mac handy, Quick Time Pro will be your friend.
Please let me know if i need to explain anything in more detail.
couldn't test it yet, running windows in virtualbox, wouldn't install frameworks, wich 3wdecoder depends on. but looks ok and reliable.
btw, use the link from the wildman prod. site itself, the direct link doesn't work for me (or is it because i'm missing framework?)
oh, and sorry for kicking up such an old thread, but thought it might be useful
jurjen many thanks for the input. i have tried this under wine and then the penny dropped and i started to read the screen.
I looks (without my specs) on that it needs "that os", this is going to sound bad but is there one for linxu or would i have to install under Vbox "that os".
many thanks
"in a world with out walls and fences who need windows and gates....."
i got it to work on vbox. Downloaded the binary from the wildman productions website. Just unpacked it, run, select the file, hit convert, sucked my thumb for 30 sec, and voila! got my movie playing without that crappy 'special player'. Unfortunately, it wasn't the 8.4 imdb rated movie, but some dirty 'transsexual movie' ... damn i hate that guys... first they try to get your money, infect you computer with a lot of spy ware, and when you finally think you got your movie, it's a dirty movie wich leaves you with nightmares...
sorry to bother you with my frustrations
bottomline, the tool works on vbox. don't no about wine, never really worked for me anyway. Got the binary from http://wildman-productions.org/files/3wdecoder.rar (direct link). did some searching on google, but couldn't find a similar tool for linux. if found one, i'll let you know
btw, wildman says the only problem is that the avi file has more than one track, but because a default player (vlc for instance) only reads one, you see the 20 sec. domplayer add. tried to extract the movie track using avisplit en tcextract, but didn't yet found out how to do it... but i can imagine it could work that way
guys the two files that we are talking about - DOM player and 3wplayer - are two intelligently placed malware. Nothing works and if at all you get the files decoded, chances are that it could be some porn movie.
Yeah I aloso read about the domplayer being more than a pain in the behind . infact Last time i downloaded and Tried such a video on my windoz X-tremely Pathetik box everything failed including decoding using packmans tool for windowz .
the only thing that worked was
selecting the file holding shift and pressing delete.
