does kde 4.2 still have the plasma desktop icons?
I'm pretty sure that I'm not the only one that noticed this, but in KDE 4.0, the desktop icons were converted to plasma widgets. I could not find anything about this on the internet, but does anyone know if this is still the case? I would upgrade my KDE if the icons were real icons.

I am not a kde user, though I use some kde applications.
However, as far as I know from the news and tech stuff I read, *everything* on the kde 4.x desktop can be catalogued in two departments:
I don't think that what you call "real icons" are going to be back at all. However, plasma is improving. The technology behind the scene shouldn't really be a concern for the user. As long as it provides the functionality that you need. There's some kind of folder view plasma thingie that does the job right now (don't ask me about its name). You can have as many of these in your desktop as you wish. |
when i said "real icons", i meant like in kde3.5, you see that you can click and manipulate them from the desktop. In kde4, all your icons are widgets, and you can close them, but that doesnt delete them. you will have to go thru konqueror and delete it from there.

Well, you can read about it here (shameless advertisement ^.-).
In short: yes you can. Right click on desktop -> Appearance Settings, change type from "Desktop" to "Folder View". |
