Does anything like partial desktop VNC exist?
 

I want a desktop split across several physical displays, but with the displays connected to different computers.

I don't know how to search for software by functionality. So the fact that I can't find this might not mean it doesn't exist.

I would have thought there would be enough demand for this, that someone writing VNC server code would figure out how to include it as an option (maybe they have and I'm just not good at understanding VNC documentation).

With VNC, I can have a "desktop" on computer X using displays on computer Y. But I only know how to do that for the whole desktop. I want a desktop on computer X to span displays on both computers X and Y.

I have use for that in a few situations, some of which require a desktop (VNC server side) on a Windows computer and some on a Linux computer. In most cases I don't care what OS I would need on the "extra display" computer (VNC-client-like side) but having that be Linux would save a few hassles.

Does such software exist?

Thanks. I would have been happier with an answer than included Windows as well as Linux. But your suggestion looks like at least a big part of what I wanted.

I haven't tried Xinerama in several years and found it confusing and glitchy when I tried it (compared to the alternate multi display support built into the driver of a multi display card). But I expect it is improved and/or worth more of my effort to figure out.
