read the naming faq, they didn't do it out of choice, it was a legal issue.

I too wouldn't mind the "old" style of download boxes, but I have no complaints against the browser. Actually, a Javascript error that was driving me nuts has been fixed in this release, so I'm happy.

As it has been noted before, the name was changed to avoid legal conflicts. As this is what they call a "technology preview," I'd expect name changes, glitches in the program, and changes made in the UI over time.

Regards,
nightwulf

I dont know if anyone has noticed this thing but, the firefox file available for download is

firefox-0.8-i686-pc-linux-gnu.tar.gz

This file will work only for Pentium III and above....I have an AMD K6-2 400 MHZ and the firefox script didnt run on my computer.....I am surprised to find why they havent made firefox available for all Intel platforms like they did with firebird....pls let me know if anyone with a P-II has got firefox running with the same file...

Regards,

amit

yes, I have it installed and running under a Dell Pentium II - 400MHZ, 512RAM. Did you really try to run Firefox? Because... Since Firebird was out, there was no install script to be run, you simplu uncompress it:

tar xvzf firefox-0.8-i686-pc-linux-gnu.tar.gz

go into the folder, and run ./Firefox or whatever it's called...

Regards!

And it probbably wont work..

The problem itself is not in the arch, i too use i686 on my K6-2 350Mhz so this is clearly not an issue. If he tried running it from the console he would see that it dies on an "Illegal instruction" error. The problem lies in the version of gtk. The default release (gtk+1) doesnt work for me for some reason. I poked around those scripts for hours and tried hacking them but with little or no success. A search on google (for the error) led me back here, to LQ, and someone had the same problem. The answer was simple, but certanly not explanatory. "Use the gtk2 version". It worked for him. And for me with my firefox. I had the same problem with mozilla 1.4 way back. Strangely, these are the only 2 versions/progs that gave me such trouble. Which bedazzles me even more is the fact that i have both gtk+1 and gtk2 installed. If someone, ANYONE, knows the reason for such a thing, LET US KNOW! I hate it when i cant figure things out...

And for the change part: no name attachments here. But i still would have liked it much better if they sticked with the icon. I got a cool sticker on my monitor that is now outdated.. I guess such things are bound to happen in development..

I have some resentments to the new d/l manager. Whether i click pause or cancel, the download continues. Oh, it is stopped in the d/l manager but my net link still runs like wild. And when i press continue it resumes from way more than it should. AND sometimes when you click pause it resumes and vice versa. Strange stuff I tell ya! BTW, when you try d/lading again it dies with a pleasent mesasge it cant do that and "sorry for that". Cool people these developers..

It was NOT a legal issue, but an act to prevent any such things. At least thats what they said..

BTW, they could update the about:mozilla page too as the BIRD is now a FOX..

firefox

Having downloaded it a few days ago, I too noticed that the pause and restart buttons of download manager have a few quirks, but overall I quite like it.
