Do you compile your own software?

This is more out of curiousity than anything else, but how many of you compile your own software? If you compile ffrom source, do you let a program such as gentoo's emerge do it or do you want to be in control of the details?

There's no point compiling for the sake compiling, I compile if I need to otherwise grab a package if available.

Paiway 12-16-2004 10:40 AM

I compile my own kernel, but that's it.

drowbot 12-16-2004 10:43 AM

I compile everything. I am power-mad. :D I use the LFS "distribution" too, so I'm used to compiling everything from source.

UsualTuxpect 12-16-2004 11:00 AM

Gentoo's "If it move's compile it", doesn't apply to me, however I compile every thing from the source.

MylesCLin 12-16-2004 11:11 AM

I compile my kernels myself for speed boost and such, and
I compile my other software sometmes, but if there's a Slack pack, I'll usually take it.

http://linuxpackages.net is a good repository of packs.

You should have put an option for those that do both. I compile my own software if I can't get my hands on the software in rpm format for my distribution.

UltimaGuy 12-16-2004 02:30 PM

I generally see if I can get my hands on a distro specific package...else I merrily go into the compiling land without any objections :)

Zuggy 12-16-2004 06:20 PM

I usually compile from sourcce. The main reason I use Linux is that I like being in complete control. I guess that's what happens when your in Leadership positions in Boy Scouts from the time your 11 until your 18. 7 years of being in charge does things to a young head.

The only time I use a package is when I don't have enough hard disk space on my lappy to compile and that's not very often.

auditek747 12-16-2004 07:43 PM

I compile almost everything because I'm a noob and it's fun.
I recently started using "checkinstall" and it's really SWEET!

melinda_sayang 12-16-2004 10:25 PM

I don't have time to compile the software so portage save my time.

iZvi 12-17-2004 12:34 PM

Compiling is always my last option, except for kernels, cause I always compile my own. First I search with swaret for a Slackware package, then I search in internet for contributed/custom packages and if I can't find or or precompiled doesn't work I compile from source. Oh, yes I also compile mplayer myself.

Mystified 12-17-2004 01:12 PM

I use portage but compile other things that aren't available myself.
