DNS server

I want to run a DNS server so I can make up my own domain names and set it as secondary in my router, so I can make something like mydomain.loc (where loc would be a root domain like .com).

I don't really understand how named/bind works and it's not really command line friendly as for editing. So is there something else available that is easier to use? Also, the ability to cache real domains would be cool too, ex: regularly dowload them from actual DNS servers once in a while.

I suggest you read the documentation that comes with BIND. If you know DNS theory and just want to learn about the particular implementation then there is nothing better than bind administrators handbook that comes along with the source package.
