DMI Pool Data ... L 01 01 01 ....

This is sort of a repeat from the "Newbies" section, but I wasn't sure where the question was most applicable.

The story in brief:

Bought a computer with a 30GB hard drive and WinXP factory installed.

Later added a 10GB HD and installed Mandrake on it just for fun.

Later still, moved the computer to my office, reformatted the 10GB hard drive. The boot sequence (LILO??) was set to default to Windows.

No problems for months.

Today, I get

Verifying DMI Pool Data ......

L 01 01 01 01 01 01 01

and repeated zero-ones for about eight lines. Then the computer hangs.

I assume something's gone whacko somewhere, and a Google search seems to indicate that Linux is the source of these sorts of problems.

I assume this has something to do with LILO...

...help?
